ESCANABA — We’ve all been to the typical wedding — long, white dress, “Here Comes the Bride” coming from the speakers in a decorated church, followed by a beautiful reception at a local hall.

While the traditional wedding is certainly still well represented, many couples are opting for alternatives, including destination weddings — getting married in Las Vegas or on a cruise ship or island.

Sherrie Skradski, convention supervisor at the Island Resort and Casino in Harris, said lately she has seen an increase in non-traditional wedding receptions, particularly hors d’oeuvre parties.

“What’s nice about that is when you have a party people are always standing around at the bar talking,” said Skradski. “More people seem to gather at the hors d’oeuvre table together, rather than sitting at a table (like at a typical dinner reception).
